Welcome to the website of the Glasgow University Dialectic Society, one of the oldest and most prestigious societies within the University of Glasgow.

Our mission is to promote and nurture the great tradition of student led public speaking, debating, discussion and literary criticism that the University of Glasgow is famed for. Our society traces its origins back to 1451 when the University was formed at a site next to Glasgow Cathedral by issue of a papal bull from Pope Nicholas V, when it is said the first students of the subject of logic formed a society dedicated to discussion pertaining to the pursuit of truth.

The Dialectic aims to promote cross-campus debate and discussion on a variety of contemporary issues, from British and international politics to ethics and metaphysics. We are open to all students at the University and recruit new members throughout the academic year. Whether you want to get involved with Union Debating, ask questions to our renowned guest panelists, develop your public speaking skills or just come along to social events, the society is for you.

However much you want to get involved, be it serving on board, becoming a member or coming to one of our open events, we hope you can find helpful information on this site. If you have any questions or want to know more, feel free to get in touch via email or one of our social media channels.
